Applegarth Holiday Cottage ... off the beaten track

Welcome to Applegarth

We are David and Julia, we bought Applegarth in 2019. We've had great holidays in the cottage over the years and have fond memories of our times there. We stay regularly ourselves. We are very pleased to have taken over and to continue Applegarth holidays.

Update New Year 2021
We are now taking bookings from May 2021 onwards [
link here], we look forward to welcoming new and returning guests.

Work to repair the storm damage to the riverbank from the previous winter is complete. Applegarth has a new fence along the bank and will be soon ready once more for holidays. Other improvements have been made
  • New controllable electric heating - no more "night storage"
  • Redecorated most rooms
  • New carpets
  • New pillows and bedlinen
In the next couple of months, a new downstairs cloakroom (just inside the back door) will replace the old outside loo.

The cottage is in a secluded spot, but only a two minute walk away from the North York Moors Railway station, with its magnificent steam trains, just by the Old School Coffee shop, located in the village of Grosmont near Whitby, North Yorkshire.

  • Sleeps 4 we have two bedrooms - a double and a twin
  • Bathroom with bath and shower over
  • … two additional fold-out beds available in the double for children/young people
  • Well-equipped Kitchen/diner with wood burning stove
  • Sitting room with TV and catch-up also with a wood burner
  • Bathroom with bath and shower over
  • Utility room with storage for coats and boots
  • Great free Wifi plus the lovely garden

  • We provide a free parking pass for the nearby North York Moors car park for one car
  • If you have more than one car, the National Park centre in Danby sells weekly permits
  • No smoking property, and sorry no pets.

We offer a perfect place to stay for:

  • People who want to get away from it all - the cottage is in a quiet peaceful setting with no direct road access - so no traffic (apart from steam trains that is!), but near the shops and coffee shop
  • Families with young children - with a secluded walled and fenced garden
  • Steam enthusiasts - NYMR steam trains passing close by every day between March and October
  • Walkers - we are on the route of the Coast to Coast walk in the heart of the beautiful Esk valley, below the stunning North York Moors
  • Cyclists - good cycle routes and the coast nearby
  • Nature lovers - abundant wildlife with lots of songbirds, a resident family of owls (a real hoot), squirrels and the occasional deer.
